Camelot Spa Abuja Review – Spa at The Dome

Last week, I won a giveaway hosted by The Dome for the newly opened Camelot Spa Abuja. Honestly, I’ve missed going to a proper spa and was happy that I was getting a free session, no excuses of having more pressing matters to spend money on now.

I’ve been managing my halawa lady from Maiduguri because she’s more affordable (about same price I used to pay at the spa when I was in Uni). Yet, I’m not even regular because adulthood and more responsibilities and priorities. Maiduguri women know how to pamper the skin.

The giveaway I won was for 60 minutes Swedish massage with the addition of Bellabaci cups for 2. I booked an appointment for the next Monday since I and my +1 were free. We got there later than our scheduled time due to certain delays at home but luckily, it wasn’t too late.

On getting there, we were offered complimentary drinks in the waiting room while the massage room was being prepped. I chose the Thalgo serenity tea while she opted for infused water. In my mind, I kept saying, “this session better be as described and it had better be worth it at the end”.

Lola and I once booked an appointment for what we thought was going to be a foam massage and Turkish hammam bath in our final year in Uni 2 years ago. When we got there, we were told it was the regular full body massage (Swedish massage) that we booked. The lady said that the information on the site was probably not updated.

She was so polite and had a nice smile so, we decided to go ahead with the massage as we were already there and it was still a full body massage. At the end of the session, though we were disappointed we didn’t get the foam massage and hamman bath that we were excited about, we were glad we had the Swedish massage.

I was excited to try the bellabaci cups as I haven’t done cupping before. I’m always excited to try new things/sessions at the spa or my halawa lady’s place whenever I can. Don’t even get me started on all the times there were epic fails. At least, I’m alive to still tell the tales.

Time for the massage, our masseuses led us into the massage room. They excused themselves while we got ready. I used the opportunity to take some photos for this blog post. One of them handles bigger people, so she took care of my +1. It was her first time, trust me to tease her a lot about some of her JJC moments, lol.

This Swedish massage at Camelot Spa Abuja got me thinking I need a refund for some of the previous Swedish massages I’ve gotten. I totally enjoyed it and I’m sure my body is still thanking me and the Dome till date.

Next was the bellabaci cups which the masseuse didn’t know was part of the session initially. She confirmed, prepped for it and we got started with her showing my +1 how the cups work. They both made few videos to show the procedure, shared some on my instagram stories already.

There’s a special oil used before the cups are placed. Apparently, they help localize areas with toxins when using the cups. The darker the color, the higher the level of toxins in that area. The cup is made of silicon and works on negative pressure to improve the body.

Cupping is an ancient Chinese therapy for creating partial vacuum on the skin to cause local congestion which draws up the underlying skin. When the cup is left for a few minutes, it creates slowing or stoppage (stasis) of blood flow at that spot and eventually causes localized healing.

The stasis is believed to bring fresh influx of toxin clearing cells which gets filtered and circulates in the bloodstream, repairs cells, tissues, etc and boosts immunity amongst other things. The masseuse said she always recommends it for fat people and anyone with cellulite and reoccurring muscle aches. It’s an add-on service to the massage therapy and costs 2,000 naira, however, she said they’re able to offer it alone on request.

The downside to the bellabaci cups for me is that the circle marks from the cups remained on my back and have only faded a bit even after 5 days. It’s a great way of taking care of your body but don’t do it if you plan on wearing a backless outfit within the same week. My back still looks like I was marked by a coven or something.

After the session, I finished my tea, relaxed a bit before dressing up. By finishing my tea and relaxing, you already know it’s to take the cliche spa photographs. Have you even been to the spa if you’ve not taken one of those robe and towel photos?
