#BecomingTheIMKs Day 2 – Kamu

On day 2, which was the day I arrived (OMG! I almost missed my flight, long story!), we had Kamu. This is one of the oldest events in the Hausa wedding ceremony. “Kamu” means catch the bride.

The groom’s family comes and negotiates with the bride’s friends for her release to them. If you are following me on IG, you would have seen the videos of the negotiations on my story. If you missed it, you can see the videos of the negotiation and other aspects of the event on my highlight.

The family had to come for their bride and they were willing to pay any price to have her. This is a really fun event and negotiation may take up to 30 minutes or more depending on the bride’s friends and the groom’s family.

The groom arrived after the negotiations had been concluded and he was carried in with the bride on a chariot. The negotiation was followed by a reception (food, music and dance) after the men (groom and friends/family) left. I ate so much during this event (the entire event actually) that I was in a perpetual state of fullness all through the weekend.

I couldn’t take lots of photos with my camera as I was busy enjoying the event and updating my Instagram stories. This was the first event we wore one of our Asoebi. The colors blended well with the environment and decor.

After the reception, we went back to our ‘Frat house’, freshened up and hung out a bit in the common room with some other guests, the groom and friends. It was really a casual gathering with most people in their PJs just eating, drinking and having discussions.

I went to bed around midnight to get some sleep before day 3 events began. Day 3 was the wedding Fatiha. This is the religious ceremony usually hosted and attended by the men in both families followed by the wedding Lunch.

Are you enjoying the posts on #BecomingTheIMKs so far? Look out for day 3 in my next post. If you missed Day 1, now is the time to catch up!
